The Guide to Skin Hydration

When your moisture barrier is damaged or compromised, it can cause serious skin hydration issues. Fortunately, damage to your moisture barrier isn’t permanent. With the right changes to your lifestyle and skincare routine, you can reverse the damage and restore your skin’s proper hydration.

In this blog post, I want to dive a little deeper into why skin hydration is important, how to identify dehydrated skin, and the best ways to keep your skin hydrated and glowing.

Why is hydration essential for skin care?

Water is an essential part of the human body’s composition: both what we contain and what we need. Renewing its frequently depleted reserves is essential to maintaining a healthy level of hydration in our bodies. And, as you may have already gathered from the introduction to this article, in our skin.

Hydration is essential to maintain the skin’s barrier function, which protects against environmental aggressors such as pollution, UV rays, and bacteria. Well-hydrated skin is more resilient, less prone to irritation, and appears firmer and more youthful. On the other hand, dehydrated skin can lead to issues such as dryness, flakiness, increased sensitivity, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Why does skin lose moisture?

I hope we can all agree that it is extremely important to moisturize your skin, but do you know why your skin loses moisture?

Well, sometimes things we do (or don’t do) reduce the water content of our skin. These things could be something like:

spend a lot of time in the cold or hot

use harsh soaps, detergents and chemicals

use rough sponges, cloths or exfoliating products

take long, hot showers or baths

not drinking enough water during the day

The good news is that all of the above problems are quite easy to fix. By drinking a few extra glasses of water each day, or reducing your shower time, or minimizing your use of soap, you can already significantly improve your skin’s hydration levels.

There are, of course, medical conditions that can lead to dehydration of the skin. For example,

  • thyroid disease
  • menopause
  • diabetes
  • poor diet, etc.

In these cases, your doctor will be able to help you find the best treatment for your condition.

How to recognize dehydrated skin?

Before we start talking about all the ways you can hydrate your skin, you need to be able to recognize when your skin needs some TLC. There are definitely multiple signs of dehydration, so it should be easy to figure out when you have it. Here are some signs you can watch out for:

  • dryness and flaking: even oily skin can feel tight and flaky when dehydrated;
  • opacity: Dehydrated skin often does not look healthy and radiant and can appear dull and lifeless;
  • fine lines and wrinkles: lack of hydration can make fine lines more evident;
  • sensitivity: dehydrated skin is more prone to redness and irritation;
  • Dark circles Dehydration can make dark circles appear more obvious.

In general, dehydrated skin will lose elasticity and will not have the radiant glow that comes with hydrated skin. Hydrating your skin is also extremely important for those with oily or acne-prone skin, as proper hydration reduces the likelihood of inflammatory markers, such as breakouts or hot flashes.

If you’re not sure about your skin’s hydration levels, there’s a little test you can do. Using your thumb and forefinger, pinch the fleshy part of your skin where your cheek and under-eye area meet.

When you do this, your skin will appear “tented” for a moment or stuck in the shape of your pinch. Your hydration level is indicated by how quickly your skin snaps back into place. The faster it snaps back into place, the higher your hydration level. Skin that slowly snaps back into place often indicates dehydration.

How to keep your skin hydrated?

As I mentioned before, there are steps you can take every day to improve your lifestyle and health, including, of course, your skin’s hydration levels. If I had to name a few simple tips to keep your skin hydrated, they would be the following:

  • get enough sleep (8-9 hours)
  • Limit your shower time to 5-10 minutes and keep the water lukewarm
  • drink enough water
  • limit the amount of coffee and alcohol you consume in your daily life
  • limit — or better yet, avoid — smoking altogether
  • eat a varied diet rich in essential fatty acids
  • Protect your skin from the sun, wind and cold
  • try to reduce your stress levels

If we talk about skin care, then the important changes you can make to your routine are:

  • switch to a gentle cleanser
  • using products containing ceramides, hyaluronic acid, lipids and fatty acids
  • using a hydrating mask from time to time
